20: WOLF BAITING - SHAME OF KYRGYZSTAN


The two day Salborün hunting festival in Kyrgyzstan, held on the northern shore of Lake Issyk Kul in the town of Cholpon-Ata, will culminate in an event where a live, restrained Wolf is mauled and maimed to death by either trained Falcons, Golden Eagles or Kyrgyzstani hunting Dogs, in a practice commonly known as Wolf-Baiting.


The Wolf used for this barbaric event will be either tied to a post or chained to heavy lead weight, with a bit placed in it's mouth, rendering the poor creature virtually defenseless, facing an horrific, painful and certain death as it is either torn to pieces, or slowly dies from blood loss. Meanwhile hundreds of Kyrgyzstani citizens will be looking on and cheering.


During this inhumane and gruesome process, severe injuries are also inflicted on the attack animals used, including broken wings and limbs, lacerations, and even death, as the Wolf desperately fights for it's life.


The use of trained Birds of Prey and Hunting Dogs in Kyrgyzstan is commonplace in rural communities, where they are used to protect livestock and vulnerable family members, with a nomadic, hunter-gatherer lifestyle being a fundamental part of Kyrgyzstani culture. The Salborün Festival is a celebration of this traditional way of life, and includes falconry, hunting with eagles, archery, and ambler races. However, the brutal practice of Wolf-Baiting exhibited at the festival is regarded as a symbolic gesture demonstrating human dominance over hunted prey, meaning this atrocity is totally unnecessary and that the Kyrgyzstani people can celebrate their heritage without it.
